Living the Dream

A few days ago Bing.com posted an article about the top 10 coolest jobs to travel with and of course being a Dive Instructor was rank within the top 10. It had to be, I mean why else do I do what I do? I have been working in the diving industry full time for now going on 8 years and I don't see myself doing anything different in the foreseeable future. If we stop and look at the position there are many, many positives. Firstly as the article said, jobs that allow you to travel and see the world. As a full-time dive instructors Vicky and myself have worked in areas such as Hawaii, Malaysia, the Andaman Island, the Bahamas, Costa Rica and now in Fiji with Diveaway Fiji. So we have managed to live and get paid to dive in some of the best diving around the world, Fiji being one of our top favorites.

Vicky and I awoke this morning on our day off with the sun shining and very few clouds in the sky, just a perfect morning to enjoy a cup of coffee on the front lanai over looking the ocean and take in the slow morning before making some coconut pancakes. Then a dip in the ocean to cool off. Life is sweet as a dive instructor. This past week was no exception. Our day off is nice to rest and recharge but all week long we had some great divers with us, making new wonderful friends and enjoying some great diving conditions.

First we started the week with Tom finishing his PADI Open Water course with Vicky, then just a day later both Melissa and Stefan finished their Open Water with me. The best part was when all three of us dropped into Bordello for dive 3 with Melissa and Stefan and Tom's final dive and were greeted by 2 turtles and 30m vis. This after a major rainstorm.

After some great dives on Wednesday and a few clouds around we were greeted Thursday by perfect weather and some better diving conditions. We had a plethora of people making their first dive ever; Claudia, Amy, Michael, Kim, Toby, Jock, Jason, Scott and Haidee, oh and of course Shane. If I forgot anyone I apologize, but I think these guys are going to be hooked. Claudia started talking about working towards her PADI Open Water as soon as we were back on the boat. I seriously thought her face would hurt from all the smiling. Shane also said he wished he had a few more days to work towards his certification. Diving just does this to you... addicted. But I guess there are way worse addictions out there than nitrogen.

But we finished off the week with a fun dive out to Fanny Hill. Known for the big stuff, FH did not disappoint. Vicky and I dropped into 40m+ visibility, swam out the channel towards the edge of the reef and straight into a huge school of barri's (barracuda). As they schooled around us off in the distance was our first friend in the grey suit, a grey reef shark swimming along the top of the reef with a smaller grey just a little further down. Throw in a couple white tips, sting rays on the bottom and my personal fave a dogtooth tuna following the school of barri's. Such a great week of diving after all those awful rains fell after New Years. Now if only I can get my camera wet. Memory card please come soon. Here's to weather looking up and continued fun in the sea working as the number 1 top travel job! Oh BTW, you don't have to be a Dive Instructor to enjoy this lifestyle, just book a holiday with us.

Cheers!
